Francis Monnier was a French literary figure, specialising in the Carolingian era, notably the figure of Alcuin,〔Monnier is the author of ''Alcuin, et son Influence Littéraire, Réligieuse et Politique chez les Franks'' (1854) and an ''Histoire des Luttes Politiques et Religieuses dans les Temps Carolingiens''.〕 who was briefly appointed in March 1863 tutor to the Prince Imperial, only son of Napoleon III, following the prince's seventh birthday.〔"The boy was at that time inclined to be turbulent and self-willed.and Monnier, a literary man,often absent-mined and careless, like some of his class, did not given full satisfaction, His place was taken, then, by M. Augustin Filon."
